Yesterday we heard about Craig Davis, VP of Urban Promotions for EMI, who came out and stated how he believes that the whole SOPA thing is the wrong way for entertainment business to try and protect their businesses. Granted he qualified his statement by saying that he was speaking for himself and not as an official representative of EMI and their position on the matter. However refreshing it might have been to hear an industry insider come out on the side of the consumer in matter like this the fact is we have and entertainment industry that will do anything it can to protect itself from having to actually try and come to grips with a changing world; you know like Warner Bros. Yes folks Warner Bros. is at it again and once more Netflix is the target for its anti-consumer behavior as we discover that not only are they making Netflix customers wait 56 between the release of a Warner Bros. movie on DVD and being able to rent it from Netflix but now that want to make you wait before you can even add it to your queue.
The real problem here is that it won’t be Warner Bros. getting the heat when people suddenly find that they can’t add DVD to their queue but rather it will be Netflix that everyone starts yelling at. Of course this is all happening because Warner Bros. is under the mistaken belief that by screwing with their customers that this is going to magically increase the sale of DVD, which are hugely profitable for the entertainment companies. Nice move Warner Bros, ya bunch of jerks.

If you grew up as a teenager you likely remember one shining gem of a movie from 1986, Ferris Bueller, not only did Bueller resonate with fans of that generation, he continued to be a favorite for years to come and now Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) will return for a special Super Bowl appearance. Chuckachucka2012 on Thursday posted a 10-second teaser of a commercial that is said to be preparing to air during the Super Bowl in which Matthew Broderick throws open the curtains and utters his famous line (slightly altered: “How can I handle work on a day like today?” The screen then quickly flashed “2.5.12″ which just happened to be the same day as the Super Bowl. Officials at the United Nations offices in New York City were shocked recently when 35.5 pounds of cocaine was accidentally shipped to their office by Mexican drug traffickers who failed to properly fill out shipping labels for their counterfeit UN bag packages. With a street value of nearly $2 million the cocaine was concealed inside fake UN bags which were sent to the organizations New York headquarters after the carrier DHL saw the UN logo at their Cincinnati, Ohio center while the packages contained no actual shipping address or return to sender information. Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne of the New York Police Department told Yahoo News:
The moment the bags arrived at the UN security staff recognize them as “obvious fakes” and inspected them on January 16. Inside the bags contained 14 hard cover books which had been hollowed out to make space for the cocaine. In the meantime officials said the bags looked nothing like official UN carrier bags but instead were made out of flour sacks or something of that nature. The drugs have been confiscated but with no return address it’s likely the culprits will get away with their crime, although I would suspect that someone within the cartel has been killed given their inability to place a simple shipping label on an illegal $2 million package.

| 17-Year-Old Girl Saved School Bus Full Of Students Posted: 26 Jan 2012 04:16 PM PST
When 17-year-old Graceanne Rumer realized that her school bus driver had collapsed from an apparent heart attack while driving her and her fellow students home she quickly jumped into action to save her fellow students from injury. Rumer ran to the front of the bus, grabbed the steering wheel and veered the school bus out of the wrong lane where it was about to be met with oncoming traffic. Speaking to NBC Philadelphia the teenager says of the entire ordeal:
What might be most incredible about the situation is that Graceanne Rumer only received her drivers license two weeks earlier. Even as a novice driver she was able to think on her feet, when she realized 51-year-old driver Charles Duncan’s foot was in the way of the break she threw the bus into park and eventually brought it to a stop. Three dozen students were riding on the bus during the time of her heroics and no injuries were reported by any of the buses passengers. We haven’t been made aware of the driver’s condition at this time but it’s safe to say the 17-year-old hero saved other students from potential injuries or worse. | Taco Bell Launches Breakfast Menu In 800 Restaurants Posted: 26 Jan 2012 04:06 PM PST
Taco Bell breakfast menu’s made their way into 800 of the company’s 5,600 restaurants on Thursday, marking the first time that the fast food service has offered breakfast foods. The initially launched is based mostly in the western US but the company hopes to have all restaurants nationwide serving breakfast based foods before the end of 2014. Options on the new menu include breakfast burritos with eggs and meat, sausage and egg wraps, orange juice, coffee and other traditional American breakfast foods with a slight twist. Items currently range in price from 99 cents to $2.79. To fully serve its breakfast options the company has partnered with some big names in the breakfast industry including Cinnabon, Seattle’s Best, Johnsonville and others. The move is largely seen as a way for Taco Bell to expand profits at a time when poor economic conditions have led many people to eat-in rather than purchase more expensive food from local diners. Speaking about the company’s push an executive at Taco Bell told the Associated Press:
In the meantime don’t expect a 6am Taco Bell breakfast burrito as the company will open later then its competitors and focus more on the younger crowd who tend to wake up later in the day. Given the fact that I can make Johnsonville food at home in a matter of minutes I have a feeling I’ll be sticking to breakfast at home for the near future. 17-year-old Stacey Irvine loves McDonalds Chicken McNuggets, so much so that it’s almost all she has eaten for the last 15 years and that fact may have led her to be hospitalized this week. According to Daily Mail the teenager ”has eaten almost nothing else apart from chicken nuggets for 15 years.” If that isn’t bad enough a source close to the girl says:
Apparently it’s not just McDonald’s McNuggets as Stacey says KFC and even supermarket brands are also fine by her although she prefers her chicken nuggets to be cooked by employees of the golden arches. In the meantime her mom says she has taken her daughter to a specialist to no avail. As her mom tells the Metro:

Bill Gates on Thursday announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide $750 million to the Global Fund which is currently fighting the worldwide spread of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The announcement arrived at the World Economic Forum and comes in the form of a promissory note which ”gives the Global Fund the flexibility and authority to distribute funds efficiently based on immediate needs.” In his statement Gates noted:

The money is a big donation to the fund and the second for Bill & Melinda Gates, through their foundation the Global Fund received $650 million 10 years ago. Newt Gingrich is known for big ideas and he didn’t disappoint at the last Republican debate in Florida. When asked about his goals for the Space Program, he advocated for a permanent American presence on the moon, manned missions to Mars and devel0ping a series of space stations which will help develop commercial space. Not bad for a days work! There is an underlying position that Newt took on the space program where he was able to model his Reaganesque type of political thought. He does not believe that the goals of the space program are going to be met by adding money and manpower to NASA. He believes the real innovation will come from encouraging the private sector to invest in space. He pointed to the case of Charles Lindbergh who was the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic. He didn’t do it because he was ordered to or as a government employee. He did it because he was trying to min a $25,000 prize. Gingrich believes that between the United States Government and private entrepreneurs there is more than enough money to encourage private sector investment in the space race. There could be private sector investment to commercialize space. Virgin Galactic is an early example. Virgin Galactic took in a prize of $10 million dollars called the X-prize to develop the first private space ship. Noe they are using that ship to power Virgin Galactic which aims to be the first space tourism company. Seats on the ship cost $200,000 and they already have more than 100 people signed up. While Ashton Kutcher may be in the process of a divorce from Demi Moore that doesn’t mean he isn’t worried about her well-being. Kutcher’s Twitter page recently went quite in regards to Moore mentions after she was checked into the hospital after suffered a seizure allegedly brought on by nitrous oxide hits from whip-its. According to reports Ashton was seen partying in Brazil at the time of Moore’s hospital check-in, however a source close to the actor tells PEOPLE that his actions weren’t what they seem. “Ashton is deeply concerned for Demi,” and ”He still cares about her and wants the best for her. But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives.” The couple announced in November that they would be separating after six years of marriage and since that time friends and family members have worried that Moore’s health has been on the decline because of stress related factors. While Ashton Kutcher continues to update his Twitter page regularly he has stopped any mention of Demi Moore since Monday night when she was rushed to the hospital after paramedics received a 911 call from the actresses home. Instead Kutcher posted a Tweet of himself with the message “surfing the streets of Sao Paulo” which was accompanied by a picture (shown above) of Kutcher standing in the rain. Army officials on Thursday announced that they are closer to identifying the remains of soldiers who were misplaced at Arlington National Cemetery, according to reports information is still being confirmed for 62,000 burial sites. Officials also announced that a new smart phone and computer GPS app will soon allow families and friends of fallen soldier to more quickly locate their tombstones exact location. When the smart phone and computer GPS program rolls out maps will be made available through a front office kiosk after a user finds the relative or friend they wish to visit. Along with their investigation Army officials say they have discovered more than 400,000 bodies are located on the premises, not the 330,000 originally believed to exist at Arlington. When not searching for missing bodies officials are attempting to located nearly $12 million that had been appropriated to Arlington National Cemetery over the years but has went missing among a myriad of accounting problems on the Army level. That Apple iPad or iPad 2 you love so much can be a real pain in the neck and we’re not talking about it’s super simple to use interface, easy to operate camera or other user friendly features, it turns out the device itself might literally be hurting your neck. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health with the help of Microsoft researchers have found that a tablet user strains neck muscles more than a laptop or desktop user because they tend to place the device on their laps and then look down at the devices. The lead author of the study told the LA Times:
It isn’t all bad news from the study, it turns out that Tablet users tend to shift their bodies and get blood flowing more actively which has been suggested for sedentary users. Regardless of your weapon of choice (tablet, desktop, laptop), researchers suggest finding a comfortable spot to sit with good straight posture. If you wish to avoid neck strain tablet stands are available for most major tablet designs, some also include built-in bluetooth keyboards which allow users to operate their tablet device in much the same way they do a laptop or desktop. A new study finds that stupidity is the one constant factor behind racism. The report from Brock University in Ontario also said that people with low intelligence tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies. Gordon Hodson, the lead researcher, said that children with low intelligence demonstrated the same prejudiced attitudes as low intelligence adults. This causes a vicious cycle where hatred literally breeds hatred. Hodson said that his research is attempting to find out why people are racist. Hodson said:
The study, of course, will cause some controversy. Brian Nosek, a social and cognitive psychologist at the University of Virginia, told Live Science:
Nosek says that several studies have connected right-wing ideals with racism, but why the relationship exists is still a bit of a mystery. Hodson believes that the question of intelligence could connect all three together. Hodson did say, however, that his study does not conclude that all conservatives are ignorant racists. Hodson said:

Shipwreck hunters have made a very interesting find in the waters beneath the Baltic Sea. The hunters have found an object shaped like Han solo’s Millennium Falcon with landing marks behind it. While it is hard to tell from the pictures, it is the size of a 747. There is also a similar object just a little smaller nearby. Shipwreck hunter Peter Lindberg says there is definitely something weird about the objects. Lindberg told CNN, “This thing turned up. My first reaction was to tell the guys that we have a UFO here on the bottom.” The CNN Anchor who interviewed Lindberg said in response, “Could this be the Star Wars Millenium Falcon, a plug to an inner world or a marine version of Stonehenge?” Lindberg says that it could be other things. It could be a downed ship, it could be mud but what it isn’t is usual. Lindberg says that it is not really possible for it to be a shipwreck. He said the shear size of it makes it unlikely that it was a ship or piece of a ship. Lindberg’s team originally had no plans to return to the sight but now with all the increased publicity they said they plan on going back to the sight around May. The Baltic Sea is a treasure hunters dream area because the waterway has a very low saline level so things that rest on the bottom tend to preserve well. People probably won’t remember this but back during the 1990′s there was a big uproar amongst security folks about a major intel gather project that the FBI was investing a lot of money and energy into called Carnivore that was designed to monitor email and electronic communications. Then around 2005 it got replaced by another software package, and not it seems that they are going to replace it with something much better, cheaper, and easier to monitor. I am of course referring to Facebook and Twitter. For the pas couple of years I have not so jokingly said that why does the FBI, or any ‘secret’ agency for that matter, need to spend any money on so-called expensive special software to track what we are doing and saying when all they have to do is get access to the Twitter and Facebook firehose of data. Well it seems that this is exactly what they are going to do if the post over at The Next Web by Harrison Weber is any indication. It seems that the FBI is on the hunt for a development team to create specialized apps that will scrape the social media data pipes and map all that data out in easy to digest formats. “SIOC intelligence staff need a tool to analyse social media focused on the situation in support of crisis operations that meets the intelligence objectives stated above”. While there are some making light of this and having fun with the idea of agencies like the FBI using Twitter or Facebook as a tool for gathering questionable intelligence the fact is that more and more of our lives are being recorded in one fashion or another by these social networks and it is all searchable if you have the right access – which you can be assured the FBI will have. Following a 911 call that sent Demi Moore to the hospital following an alleged run-in with nitrous oxide contained in whip-it shots the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has agreed to release the tape following their own review. The 911 call made by a friend of Demi’s will be edited in order to remove mention of Moore’s medical condition or medications she may be prescribed. Officials worry that such information would violate privacy laws. After being transported to the hospital Demi Moore’s rep said she required “professional assistance” while dealing with a bout of “exhaustion” brought on by her busy schedule. Hours later news surfaced that she may have been doing whip-its, a popular high among teenagers and college students. Demi Moore was believed to have had a seizure before the 911 call was made and she was rushed to the hospital. One thing is for certain, Mrs. Moore has appeared frail in recent months to the point where questions have been raised about substance abuse and a possible bout of anorexia. Moore has been in the spotlight recently as her and husband Ashton Kutcher head towards divorce court, apparently because of his infidelities and her penchant for alleged substance abuse. Family and friends quickly rushed to the actress/producers side and Moore’s camp has not provide official information regarding her condition at this time. A herd of elephants at Munich’s Hellabrunn Zoo mourned the loss of a three-month old baby calf named Lola this week. Panang, Lola’s mother, and the rest of the herd gathered to say goodbye to the baby elephant. When Panang had finished saying goodbye, the rest of the elephants took turns laying their trunks on Lola’s head. Lola suffered from a condition that made it difficult for her to believe. The baby elephant was scheduled to have groundbreaking surgery later this week. Zoo director and veterinarian Dr Andreas Knieriem, said:

Scientists on Thursday announced that they are one step closing to turning Harry Potter fans invisible. A group of researchers has managed to fully high an object from light from all angles. While news of the discover is a giant leap forward for cloaking technology the AFP warns that we shouldn’t get too excited yet, that’s because the only light the material masks comes from the microwave spectrum which we can’t see with our own eyes. The group managed to hide a 7.2-inch cylinder from microwaves which proves that “plasmonic meta-materials” actually work. According to the AFP:
While the same technique might work at this time on the visible spectrum researchers warn that it would likely only be effective on extremely small objects that measure in micrometers and not inches like their current tests. Regardless of future advances the ability to mask an object is still useful, for example it could be used to create “super-stealth” aircraft that can not be detected by radar microwaves. Researchers plan to continue their research in the hopes of extending beyond the microwave light spectrum. So there you have it Harry Potter fans, your very own invisibility cloak might one day become a reality, although I highly doubt they will be made available on the open market at least not in the type of form used to hide people.
